In the beginning…
Heaven Sent was founded twenty-five years
ago when two moms dreamed of a children’s
consignment store with a high quality
feel that emphasized family friendly
service. Original owners Sheryl Peters-Knecht
and Teresa Simpson both had newborn
baby girls they loved to buy clothing
and toys for, but didn’t like
paying the high prices of regular retail.
Their first 1200 square foot store in
Federal Way opened in October 1983 and
was an immediate success. While one
owner worked the store, the other owner
babysat the 2 girls. Initially all merchandise
was consigned, but Heaven Sent gradually
began buying items outright to make
it a simpler process for all.
Due to ever increasing inventory and
sales, six years later (and several
children later), Sheryl and Teresa moved
the store to the present 2200 square
foot location in Neon Plaza close to
the local Federal Way mall. At the new
location they saw a dramatic increase
in sales so added several employees.
Over the years Heaven Sent has had many
devoted employees, some working for
15 years or more. During the mid nineties
they also operated a store in Lakewood
south of Tacoma. It was closed in 1998,
as the sales were not as strong as in
Federal Way.
In 2003, Sheryl decided to retire so
sold her interest to one of Heaven Sent’s
first employees, Sue Campbell.
Even though their own children are almost
all grown up, Sue and Teresa still enjoy
running the business. Over the last
few years they’ve had the pleasure
of seeing some of the original customers
that “graduated” from Heaven
Sent years ago coming back in now as
grandparents. Federal Way has been a
wonderful community to do business in.
They are very thankful for all the wonderful
customers who’ve supported Heaven
Sent all these years.
